With many jobs requiring long hours sitting at a computer station, back discomfort is on the rise. Our Everett chiropractor wants you to work without pain and promote a healthy spine by using good posture and setting up your work station to best fit your body. Instead of hunching, slouching or reaching for your keyboard, a desk and chair set up to support a neutral posture is best.
Important Tips for Pain Relief from Cornerstone Chiropractic
- Select a chair that positions your thighs parallel with the ground so your knees and hips are at the same level. Your feet should rest comfortably on the floor. The chair should also provide support for your lower back and follow the curve of your spine.
- Set the height of your desk to elbow level when you are seated. You should have a 1 to 2 inch clearance between your thighs and the desk.
Place your computer screen in the center of your body so you are looking straight ahead. - Position the monitor approximately an arm’s length away from you.
The height of the computer screen is set so the top of the screen is in line with your eyes. - Use a document holder placed next to the monitor to avoid rotating to view papers.
- Sit tall with your ears over your shoulders and shoulders over the hips.
- Stretch occasionally as you are working by standing up and reaching overhead or tilting your head slowly side to side.
- Take a walk break every hour for five minutes to increase circulation to your lower back and help reduce the strain from extended sitting.
- Invest in an external monitor if using a laptop to allow for a healthier seated position.
