Our bodies are revitalized and powered by the foods we eat on a daily basis. Our digestive systems pull the nutrients we need from the foods we consume, but what happens if our diet simply doesn’t contain enough of all the nutrients our body needs to function properly? Sometimes, a simple change in diet or adding whole food supplements is all it takes to raise our vitamin and mineral levels to the right place.

Do I Need Dietary Supplements?

Eating a wide variety of foods with a range of beneficial and nutritional qualities is the first step towards living a healthy lifestyle. Whole food supplements aren’t designed to become a substitute for food, they simply fill in the nutritional gaps in your diet. While certain conditions are likely to need a dietary supplement, even the most health-conscious can benefit from nutritional counseling.

Those specifically at risk for an imbalance of nutrients include adults over the age of 50, those with dietary restrictions and pregnant women. Often, aging adults need additional fortification of vitamin B12, which can be accomplished by eating specially fortified cereals or taking a B12 supplement. Pregnant women most often need additional folic acid and iron added to their diets through fortified foods or supplements. Additional supplements may be necessary for those with:

  • Diets containing less than 1,600 calories a day
  • Diets lacking meat (vegan or vegetarian) or only containing a limited variety of foods
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • A condition that causes your body to misuse nutrients or not fully absorb them (food allergies, chronic diarrhea, food intolerance, liver disease, etc.)
  • Digestive problems due to past surgery on the digestive tract

Supplement Concerns and Nutritional Counseling

Many patients research and select supplements they want to take without ever consulting a professional. Nutritional Counseling is important to keep patients from wasting their money on unnecessary supplements and causing possible conflict between their supplement choices and medications.

The body can only absorb so much of a particular nutrient, simply discarding the excess and even raising the risk of side affects. It would be a real waste to spend money on monthly whole food supplements, only to find that some of them were completely unnecessary due to your current diet. A nutritional consultant helps determine areas where you likely need a nutrient boost, and also recommends those nutrients that won’t negatively conflict with your medications or dietary habits.

Whole Food Supplements vs Synthetic

Just like natural whole foods are better for you than refined foods, natural supplements are better than the synthetic alternatives. If you would think twice about using bleached flour or refined sugar in your daily foods, then why settle for a synthetic supplement? Wouldn’t it logically make sense that supplements created from whole foods are going to be better digested and more naturally beneficial?

We think so, and the supplements we carry align with this way of thinking. As your chiropractor in Everett, we want to supply you with healthy supplements to pair with your healthy and active lifestyle.
