Benefits of Massage

Massage therapy benefits your entire body.  The benefits are also cumulative, meaning that the more massages you receive, the better you feel.

Reduce Overall Body Pain and Muscle Soreness after Exercise

Receiving just one massage can noticeably reduce your overall body pain.  The kneading and stroking relaxes muscles and removes tight spots.  For individuals that exercise, receiving a massage shortly after physical exertion reduces muscle pain.  It can also prevent delayed onset muscle soreness, which is the pain older individuals feel between two and three days after the physical activity.  When the muscles are worked vigorously, they produce lactic acid.  Without a massage, the lactic acid stays in the muscle, causing soreness, stiffness and pain.

Ease the Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety

If you suffer from depression or anxiety, getting a massage can noticeably reduce your symptoms.  Getting a massage allows you to take time for yourself.  They reduce stress and facilitate feelings of well-being, which reduces the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Reduce Frequency and Severity of Headaches

If you get frequent, severe headaches or migraines, a massage can help you.  Tension headaches are caused by tight muscles in the shoulders and neck.  Massages release the pressure in the muscles and lower inflammation, which reduces the frequency of tension headaches.  Migraine suffers can enjoy the same benefits because massages help release endorphins, which are the body’s way of dealing with pain.

Improved Blood Flow

Stress, muscle tension and tight spots restrict blood flow throughout the body.  By receiving a massage, you are loosening the muscles and soft tissues, which improves the function of the circulatory system.

Improve Immune System Function

Studies have shown that receiving regular massages helps increase while blood cell counts.  White blood cells are responsible for fighting infections.  When more cells are present in the blood, the body is able to better fight off bacterial and viral infections.

Promotes Healing and Improves Skin Function

Receiving regular massages can decrease healing times for soft tissue injuries. Massages also help break apart scar tissue.  Scar tissue forms when the body is injured.  It is tough, fibrous tissue that can limit range of motion.  The kneading and stroking, during a massage, helps break apart the adhesions, which improves range of motion and flexibility.

Massages also improve the appearance and function of the skin.  The lotion or oil used during the massage helps hydrate and soften the skin.  After each massage, our massage therapist instructs each recipient to drink lots of water.  The water helps flush the body of the released toxins.

Makes Chiropractic Adjustments More Effective

Chiropractic adjustments can be performed without a prior massage, but receiving a massage before your chiropractic appointment helps loosen the tendons and ligaments.  This allows our chiropractor to use less pressure during the adjustment, which makes it more comfortable.  The adjustments also last longer if they are performed after a massage.
