“Knead” Help for Back Pain or Neck Pain? Try Massage Therapy!

Posted on 2012-05-22 13:57:51

back pain massage therapy for Everett patients.jpgFor hundreds of years, cultures around the world have used massage therapy for health and wellness. Increasing volumes of modern scientific research are now revealing the mechanisms behind why massage provides relief for everything from back pain and neck pain to headaches and depression. In fact, our Everett chiropractor often recommends massage along with chiropractic care because of the many benefits it provides.

3 Benefits of Massage Therapy for Overall Wellness

While there are many ways in which massage therapy promotes overall wellness, these are three of the main benefits we see in our Everett chiropractic patients:

Stress Relief—Massage is a powerful natural stress reliever that helps the body from the inside out. Studies show that at least 90% of doctor visits stem from stress-induced ailments such as heart and blood pressure problems, diabetes, asthma, depression, and headaches. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that nearly $300 billion worth of lost work time and injuries are related to stress. Our chiropractor often recommends massage to patients because it not only helps alleviate stress-related problems, but it can actually prevent stress-induced injuries.

Pain Relief—We have known for a long time that massage releases endorphins, the body’s own pain relievers, right into the bloodstream for drug-free pain relief. New studies show how massage reduces inflammation and pain in overworked, injured muscles at the cellular level. This helps accelerate injury recovery times and improves range of motion, which explains why it works so well for back pain and neck pain.

Immune Booster—Several studies also show that massage can help the body ward off infections by stimulating the immune system. One study concluded that it was particularly helpful for people with autoimmune disorders where the body starts attacking itself. These studies link its wellness and immune-boosting powers back to its stress relieving properties.

Chiropractic Treatment for Headache Pain

Posted on 2012-04-25 10:12:43

pain management for headache pain.jpgOne of the things that can most significantly affect your ability to function well in everyday life is having a headache. The pain can affect your concentration, vision, and your ability to get tasks done. Our chiropractic office wants to equip you with the knowledge you need to discover the root causes of your head pain and move past it. Here are some of the causes that have the strongest links to headaches.

What Can Trigger Headaches?

- Neck Pain

When you experience pain in your neck, this indicates a potential misalignment or tension that can lead to a headache if it is not treated. Chiropractic care is one of the best ways to alleviate neck pain that is at the root of your headache. Getting adjustments at the chiropractor or benefiting massage therapy will ease your spine back into alignment or relax the muscles that are leading to the pain you feel. You can also reduce your chance of future pain by changing your position regularly and focusing on your posture when you are sitting, especially for long periods of time.

- Stressful Situations

Over time, experiencing stressful situations on a regular basis can cause headaches. Many people with regular head pain are managing a lot of mental stress, anxiety, or depression that will often trigger a headache at the most inconvenient time. In addition, stress often causes people to sleep poorly, which can worsen the problem.

- Food and Beverages

Dehydration, even in its early stages, can cause head pain, so drinking a glass of water is one of the first lines of defense. Drinking alcohol can also cause pain by decreasing blood circulation. Food additives, like MSG, preservatives, and artificial sweeteners, can trigger headaches in some people. Some people often get a headache after eating aged cheese, which contains tyramine, a substance that can increase blood pressure. And of course, getting too much caffeine or not getting enough when your body is used to it can also lead to a headache.

What other headache triggers have you noticed in your life?

Everett Sciatica Pain Is Relieved With Chiropractic Care Techniques

Posted on 2012-02-21 14:25:51

Everett chiropractors help with sciatica pain.jpgSciatica is the pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve. Your sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from your low back, through the hip area and down each leg. This nerve branches out into smaller nerves down the legs in your thighs and feet. It controls many of the muscles in your lower legs. With sciatica you typically experience lower back pain and leg pain. Your pain spreads down the lower lumbar region of the back causing numbness and tingling in the affected leg.

Some of the most common causes of sciatica or nerve compression can be a misaligned vertebrae and/or a herniated or bulging disc. Another cause is piriformis syndrome. Your piriformis muscle lies directly over the sciatic nerve. Pressure is put directly on the sciatic nerve when the muscle becomes tight or goes into spasms.

Sciatica Treated with Adjustments and Massage Therapy

Chiropractic care is an effective treatment for sciatica. Our Everett chiropractors treat neck pain, back pain and headaches as well as other musculoskeletal pain. Often times, they are able to find the source of the nerve blockage and use manual chiropractic adjustments to correct your spinal misalignment. Sciatic pain can be relieved with corrective exercises such as a combination of stretches and massage therapy through deep tissue massage.

Our massage therapist will massage the piriformis muscle to relax it and prevent it from causing more sciatic nerve pain. Since pain medications mask the symptoms instead of allowing them to heal, chiropractic methods may be the better option. Spinal alignment has been known to improve and reduce pain in your sciatic nerve.

Our Everett chiropractors are concerned with improving your overall wellness. You will not only receive excellent chiropractic care at our clinic but also get lifestyle advice and nutritional counseling. If you are suffering from back pain, neck pain or headaches caused by sciatica or other nerve, muscle or joint problems, then call our office today.

Nutritional Counseling and a Steady Stream of Exercises for Weight Loss Success

Posted on 2012-01-19 11:30:24

Everett weight loss tips.jpgWe know that losing weight can be a long process, full of pitfalls and setbacks. That's why we don't advocate one single diet for every patient. We use nutritional counseling to help each patient discover the food plan that's right for each individual need. There is no one perfect method to weight loss. It's a matter of finding out what works for your body and keeping at it until you reach your goal weight.

Weight Loss Tips

Losing weight at a sustainable level, which means taking it off and keeping it off, is a twofold process. It's not all diet and it's not all exercising. The people who get healthy and stay that way combine both practices into a lifestyle they can keep up for the rest of their lives. This means sitting down and planning out exactly what you are willing to do in order to lose weight.

Invest in our nutritional counseling to develop a food program that fits in with your life. A balanced diet that includes all the nutrients you body needs, as well as the foods you really like to eat, is the best way to be on your way to losing weight.

Finding strength, flexibility and cardio exercises that you enjoy are also an important part of the goal to lose weight. Sometimes exercising during your diet program can cause muscle aches, back pain and neck pain. This is due to unused parts of the body being put to use for the first time in a long time. Until your body gets used to moving around at this rate, visit our chiropractor for advice on safe levels of exercise, as well as workout plans and warnings against some forms of exercise.

If you're a beginner to the world of working out, it does you no good to go overboard and injure yourself. Work with the doctor to develop a plan that gradually increases in length of time and intensity for the best results.

Everyone's weight loss journey is different, and we want to make yours a success. What can we do to help you along the road to a healthier lifestyle?

It is not yet certain what causes fibromyalgia to happen in some people and not in others, but it is possible that genetics plays a role, as do stress levels. People who were in traumatic accidents, such as a car accident in which they suffered damage to the neck, may be at higher risk for development of chronic pain
